Nonpharmaceutical Influenza Mitigation Strategies, US Communities, 1918–1920 Pandemic1
We studied nonpharmaceutical interventions used to mitigate the second, and most deadly, wave of the 1918-1920 influenza pandemic in the United States. We conclude that several small communities implemented potentially successful attempts at preventing the introduction of influenza.

Since global availability of vaccine and antiviral agents against influenza caused by novel human subtypes is insufficient, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends non-pharmaceutical public health interventions to contain infection, delay spread, and reduce the impact of pandemic disease. Virus transmission characteristics will not be completely known in advance, but difficulties in infl...

Recent human deaths due to infection by highly pathogenic (H5N1) avian influenza A virus have raised the specter of a devastating pandemic like that of 1917-1918, should this avian virus evolve to become readily transmissible among humans. We introduce and use a large-scale stochastic simulation model to investigate the spread of a pandemic strain of influenza virus through the U.S. population ...

CONTEXT A critical question in pandemic influenza planning is the role nonpharmaceutical interventions might play in delaying the temporal effects of a pandemic, reducing the overall and peak attack rate, and reducing the number of cumulative deaths. Such measures could potentially provide valuable time for pandemic-strain vaccine and antiviral medication production and distribution. Optimally,...

The states are vector structures containing 12 elements representing 3 possible vaccination groups (no-vaccine (i=1), pre-vaccine and matched vaccine (i=2) or matched vaccine only (i=3)) and 3 population groups (0-19 years (j=1), 20-64 years (j=2), and 65+ (j=3)). Susceptible states, for example, can be written as Si, i,j=1..3. The parameters ω and γ were fixed constants representing the rate o...
